Creativity and Incentives
Creativity is one of the most important qualities in my life. I try to improve my own, and I value it in other people. Creativity, I believe, ultimately trumps other qualities: intelligence, financial capital, and even perseverance. In fact, creativity is what makes those other qualities worth having.
So I was just delighted to see this video come through my RSS reader.
The video is Dan Pink speaking about how we (“western” businesses) destroy creativity when we attach rewards to it. Fascinating look at the science behind something many of us feel is true- intrinsic motivators spur creativity while extrinsic ones dampen it.
I saw this on the Lateral Action blog (which you should be reading).
It is originally from a TED talk (which you should be watching).

Thanks! Don’t you just love the 21st century? The scientists are busy confirming what we intuitive/creative types have known all along.
